French Art Nouveau Ceramics: An Illustrated Dictionary
French Art Nouveau Ceramics: An Illustrated
This book is a unique and comprehensive illustrated dictionary of French Art Nouveau Ceramics.A census conducted in 1901 indicated the existence of some 209 producers of pottery in France, employing a total of around 5,800 full-time labourers. This great activity stimulated a parallel development in the arts, including the search for new expressions in art pottery, giving birth to l'art nouveau, a great and eclectic synthesis of a number of other art styles. Largely through British arts and crafts, and the work of artists like the Manxman Archibald Knox, it reached far back into the prehistory of Celtic art. To this were added later medieval elements, through the gothic revival championed by William Morris. The need for renewal, breaking away from the neo-Classical and academia, which was realm of the upper-class culture, was largely theorised by John Ruskin, who searched elsewhere for inspiration. Thus did British art nouveau also partake of Chinese and Japanese styles, though never in so forceful a manner as did the French aesthetic. France, on the one side, looked back to the swirling and frivolous eighteenth century Rococo, primarily through the influence of the Goncourt brothers, Edmond and Jules, influential aesthetes of the mid nineteenth century. The book focuses especially...

Tiles & Styles, Jugendstil & Secession: Art Nouveau and Arts & Crafts Design in German and Central European Decorative Tiles, 1895-1935
Tiles & Styles, Jugendstil & Secession: Art Nouveau
This book looks at decorative tiles manufactured in Germany, Austria, Hungary and Bohemia/Moravia/Czechoslovakia in the years between 1895 and 1935. These ceramic tiles, used primarily on walls, floors, and stoves, but also furniture, trays and more, were an affordable decor element that made art accessible to many. They would also turn out to be some of the best examples of the Jugendstil and Secession movements in design: Both were variations of international art nouveau and rejected the conservative aesthetics of mainstream art. In Part I of the book, the author places these movements within the context of art history, then explores the history of the tiles. In Part II, a broad look is taken at arts and crafts and art nouveau tiles, including influences from other Western and Central European nations. With almost 600 color photos of tiles, this book will appeal to art historians, decorative arts aficionados, and anyone who appreciates beautiful, inspirational design.

Art Nouveau Tiles (Shire Library)
Art Nouveau Tiles (Shire
At the turn of the last century, Art Noveau, characterised by its natural, swirling lines and exuberant use of colour, held sway as the dominate style in architecture and design. The style defined the Edwardian period, with its departure from more formal Victorian styles. The leading tile manufacturers of the day seized on the popularity of the new style and introduced extensive ranges of Art Noveau tiles, many of them mass-produced in Stoke-on-Trent, the centre of the British pottery industry. The author charts the impact of this sensous style on the tile industry in Britain showing how tiles were made and decorated, and describing the innovations introduced by creative designers such as Lewis Day and William Neatby. With photographs of the tiles, individually and in situ in public buildings and homes, the author examines the diverse range of floral, animal and human subject matter found on Art Nouveau tiles that now make them so appealing to collectors and design historians.

Meiji Ceramics: The Art of Japanese Export Porcelain and Satsuma Ware 1868-1912
Meiji Ceramics: The Art of Japanese Export Porcelain
Pressure exerted by America in 1854 caused Japan to open its doors after 260 years of isolation. Wide receptiveness to everything Western was the driving force behind the modernization of Japan initiated by the Meiji government, yet it also induced a rapid rediscovery of indigenous cultural values. At early Paris and London international exhibitions, the Japanese decorative and applied arts sparked off the Western fascination with all things Japanese japonisme. In Japan, on the other hand, new technologies were eagerly adopted the government realized that increasing production for export would be an excellent means of promoting Japanese economic growth and thus enhancing Japan's status worldwide. Meiji Ceramics represents the first in-depth study of the development of Japanese export porcelain against a highly charged background of political, economic and cultural factors. Includes 180 artists's signatures. Text in English.
