Duke Ellington & John Coltrane + 4 Bonus Tracks

Duke Ellington & John Coltrane + 4 Bonus

By the time this album was recorded, Duke Ellington had already become a major jazz star with nearly a four-decade musical career under his belt. He had played regularly on some of the most renowned stages in the world. Coltrane, who had been a member of the Miles Davis group and the Thelonious Monk quartet (with whom he recorded a number of albums), formed his own band in 1960 and recorded a plethora of classic LPs for Atlantic. While Duke was a consecrated figure, Trane was one of the promising new voices of modern jazz. Even though the saxophonist would delve further into free jazz a few years later, he still enjoyed playing ballads and blues in 1962. The swing idiom, of course, wasn't new to him, nor was the Ellington sound. One of Coltrane's earliest professional jobs as a musician had been as a member of alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges' band (during one of the short periods in which Hodges left the Ellington orchestra). Nor was Ellington new to ''modern jazz'', as he was a perennially ''modern'' composer, who frequently expressed his admiration for Thelonious Monk (with whom he played at Newport), Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie (with whom he shared an album), and Charles Mingus (a private recording of the Ellington band playing Mingus' ''The Clown'' still exists), among oth...

It's a challenge to transform the "Nutcracker Suite's" romantic orchestra into jumpin' jazz melodies, but that's exactly what Duke Ellington and his collaborator, Billy Strayhorn, did.Ellington's band memebers were not so sure that a classical ballet could become a cool-cat jazz number. But Duke and Billy, inspired by their travels and by musical styles past and present, infused the composition with Vegas glitz, Hollywood glamour, and even a little New York jazz.

The Ellington Suites

The Ellington

The Ellington Suites is a studio album by American pianist, composer and bandleader Duke Ellington which collects three suites recorded in 1959, 1971 & 1972 (originally released on the Pablo label in 1976). The album won a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Performance by a Big Band. Interesting fact: Ellington wrote The Queens Suite for Queen Elizabeth II, who was presented with a single pressing of the recording which was not commercially issued during Ellington s lifetime. This newly remastered edition features a previously unreleased bonus track; the only known recording of the Ellington composition The Kiss.

At Rainbow Grille

At Rainbow

This CD contains rarely heard arrangements of some of Ellington's best compositions. Billy Strayhorn once stated that 'Duke Ellington plays the piano, but his real instrument is the orchestra'.. Even if this is in some way true, Duke's sporadic experiments with smaller groups and his skills as a pianist were nevertheless superb. The live performance at the Rainbow Grill offered here gives additional evidence of his stature as an instrumentalist. The octet was formed taking several of the major soloists from the 1967 Ellington band, including five horns (Cat Anderson on trumpet, Lawrence Brown on trombone, Johnny Hodges on alto sax, Paul Gonsalves on tenor sax and Harry Carney on baritone sax), plus the rhythm section including the Duke himself, John Lamb on bass, and Steve Little on drums. 13 tracks total, including 'In a Sentimental Mood', 'Azure', 'Rock the Clock' and more. Anthology - Duke Ellington

Anthology - Duke

Equally at home in the dance hall and the concert hall, nobody did more to make jazz a serious art form than Duke Ellington. He was one of the most important creative forces in the music of the twentieth century. His influence on classical music, popular music, and, of course, jazz, simply cannot be overstated. As Miles Davis once said: "Some day all the jazz musicians should get together in one place and get down on their knees and thank Duke.
