German Secret Flight Test Centers to 1945

German Secret Flight Test Centers to

This is a major piece of research by a group of German authors, some of whom were involved at the same time, into the establishment and activities of government flight-test centers in Germany from its resumption of flight testing in the 1920s until the end of World War II. Their work will be of outstanding interest to students of World War II and the Luftwaffe. The authors begin with the secret testing in cooperation with the Red Army in the 1920s/30s. The book addresses the major locations where testing was conducted, including Johannisthal, Lipetsk, Rechlin, Travemunde, Tarnewitz and Peenemunde-West. Other less well known locations including early experimentations at Doberitz and Danzig are also covered. The book draws on an extensive collection of photographs and documents, many taken from previously unpublished sources. There are also comprehensive listings of the aircraft used, with such details as Werknummern, markings, engines. There are similarly detailed lists of personnel and the various research and test units. There is still enormous interest in the Luftwaffe and especially in the experimental aircraft, which were produced and tested in Germany during the period of the Third Reich. This book will appeal directly to this market and achieve the same success of other Midl...

German Night Fighter Force 1917-1945

German Night Fighter Force

The German Night Fighter force had its origins in the First World War to repel night raids and to fly long-range intruder sorties. They developed operational procedures which became largely forgotten a few years after the Armistice. The Western Allies, Britain and France, maintained and improved night-fighting tactics, but the creators of the new Luftwaffe did not at first think about night fighting at all and during the building up of the service and it received only cursory attention in the first large-scale war games held in November 1934. This changed in 1936 and the results of some exercises were set down in a secret study prepared for the Air District school in November of that year. After the onset of War, and the British and French night attacks on the western area of the Reich, night-fighting became more of a priority. As a consequence of the urgent necessity the Luftwaffe developed sophisticated techniques including basic cooperation and coordination and the increased use of electronic systems. Gebhard Aders’ study of the History of the German Night Fighter Force is a highly detailed analysis with numerous appendices which provides a comprehensive account of the Luftwaffe’s thoroughness right up to the end when the hunters became the hunted.

SPAD XIII vs Fokker D VII: Western Front 1916-18 (Duel)

SPAD XIII vs Fokker D VII: Western Front

Having established its SPAD VII as the most effective French fighter of 1916, the Societé Pour l'Aviation at ses Dérivés strove to improve the model with a 220hp Hispano Suiza 8B engine and two machine guns. Despite initial teething troubles with the new engine, by mid-1918 the SPAD XIII had taken its place as the principal fighter of both France and the US. Meanwhile, the German quest for a successor for their structurally flawed Albatros D V finally bore fruit with the Fokker D VII. Entering combat in May 1918, this plane earned a reputation as the most formidable fighter of the war, yet the SPAD XIII's greater speed, especially in a dive, and its outstanding durability, proved a fearsome rival. This is the gripping story of two of the best fighters produced in World War I - the SPAD XIII and the Fokker D VII - as they dueled in the skies above the trenches in the closing months of the war. Never before published artwork, including fascinating cockpit illustrations, reveal several dramatic clashes between the two foes while diary entries and first-hand accounts from the pilots bring this classic World War I duel to life with intimate detail.

First Jet Pilot: The Story of German Test Pilot Erich Warsitz

First Jet Pilot: The Story of German Test

On 27 August 1939, Flugkapitan Erich Warsitz became the first man to fly a jet aircraft, the Heinkel He 178 and in June of the same year he flew the first liquid-fuel rocket aircraft, the Heinkel He 176. His legendary flying skills enabled him to assist the pioneering German aircraft and engine design teams that included Wernher von Braun and Ernst Heinkel. He repeatedly risked his life extending the frontiers of aviation in speed, altitude and technology and survived many life-threatening incidents. This book is written by Erich’s son who has used his father’s copious notes and log books that explain vividly the then halcyon days of German aviation history. Warsitz was feted by the Reich’s senior military figures such as Milch, Udet and Lucht and even Hitler keenly followed his experimental flying. Little is known of this pioneer period because of the strict secrecy which shrouded the whole project – it is a fascinating story that tells of the birth of the jet age and flight as we know it today. The book includes many unseen photographs and diagrams.

The Great War’s Finest series is the first detailed operational history of the German Air Service in the Great War. Volume 1 covers Fliegertruppe operations over the Western Front in 1914 in unprecedented detail and reveals that within two to three weeks of the start of the war, German commanders were already dependent on the results of aerial reconnaissance for intelligence about enemy troop movements. In turn, the results of aerial reconnaissance were crucial to high-level decision-making. This book details the results of many individual reconnaissance flights and the specific command decisions based on their observations. Volume 1 contains 35 maps in color, 165 photos and postcards, 72 of them in color, and several color profiles of 1914 German reconnaissance airplanes in its 378 pages. Extensive order of battle information and other data are summarized in appendices. The Great War's Finest is a landmark contribution to the study of aerial operations during WWI.

Undoubtedly the most famous fighter type to see service on either side during World War 1, the Fokker Dr I was a revelation when it entered service on the western front in 1917. Manfred von Richthofen's JG 1 'circus' was the first Jasta to completely re-equip with the new fighter, and in the skilled hands of its numerous aces the Dr I proved a formidable opponent. The Dr I remained in service on the Western Front until replaced by the superior Fokker D VII in May 1918. Just weeks prior to that, however, Germany's leading ace, the great 'Red Baron', had been killed at the controls of a Dr I.

No Parachute: A Classic Account of War in the Air in WWI

No Parachute: A Classic Account of War in

This account of the Great War puts you right in the action—from one of the fighter pilots of the Royal Flying Corps.   From the young airmen who took their frail machines high above the trenches of World War I and fought their foes in single combat, there emerged a renowned company of brilliant aces—among them Ball, Bishop, McCudden, Collishaw, and Mannock—whose legendary feats have echoed down half a century. But behind the elite pilots in the Royal Flying Corps, there were many hundreds of airmen who flew their hazardous daily sorties in outdated planes without ever achieving fame.   Here is the story of one of these unknown flyers—a story based on letters written in the day, telling of a young pilot’s progress from fledgling to seasoned fighter. His descriptions of air fighting, sometimes against the Richthofen Circus, of breathless dogfights between Sopwith Pup and Albatros, are among the most vivid and immediate to come out of World War I.   Arthur Gould Lee, who rose to the rank of air vice-marshal and also authored the classic Open Cockpit, brilliantly conveys the immediacy of air war, the thrills and the terror, in this honest and timeless account.

Gott Strafe England. Volume 1: The German Air Assault against Great Britain 1914-1918

Gott Strafe England. Volume 1: The German Air

"Gott Strafe England" is the definitive account detailing the German air attacks against Great Britain during the First World War. This method of attack was a totally new concept, taking the war away from the battlefield and into the previously safe territory of the enemy’s homeland. As a result the concept of strategic bombing was born. This two-volume series will explore all the German air operations against the British Isles during 1914 to 1918, and assess the effectiveness of this new form of warfare. It will detail the routes taken by the raiders, where the bombs fell and the casualties inflicted. Alongside this are details of the responses taken by the defenders to counter the attacks. Full details about the airships, aircraft and their crews that were brought down are examined. This evidence includes contemporary accounts by those involved, in the form of intelligence summaries and personal accounts which graphically impart the full drama and horror of the events. "Gott Strafe England" was conceived following the publication of the author’s books on German Air Force losses over Great Britain during the Second World War, "Luftwaffe Crash Archive" (Red Kite 2013, volumes ongoing). This present volume completes the overall picture by including details of those airships an...

Aces of Jagdgeschwader Nr III (Aircraft of the

Royal Prussian Jagdgeschwader Nr III was the third of Germany's vaunted fighter wings to be formed during World War 1. Commanded by the Pour le Mérite winner and well-respected ace Hauptmann Bruno Loerzer for its entire existence, it was composed of the celebrated Jasta 'Boelcke', along with Jagdstaffeln 26, 27 and 36. Equipped largely with the new Fokker triplane, these four units would play an important role in the Kaiserschlacht as part of the 17. Armee. As Germany's fortunes waned in the summer of 1918, the aces of JG III nonetheless did their best to stem the tides of British, French and later American aircraft they encountered. Aces such as Carl Bolle, Paul Bäumer, Heinrich Bongartz, Hermann Frommherz, Rudolf Klimke and the infamous Hermann Göring all carved their names in the record books flying in this formidable formation. This book examines the tactics, achievements and personalities of one of the deadliest of Germany's aerial units.
