Jascha Heifetz - The Complete Stereo Collection Remastered
Jascha Heifetz - The Complete Stereo Collection
Jascha Heifetz has been called the first and greatest of all virtuosos. Critics agree when RCA Victor once dubbed him The Violinist of the Century . Now all of Heifetz s stereo recordings are being issued together in a single Sony Classical box of 24 CDs, coupled by composer and remastered from the original analogue tapes in 24-bit / 192 kHz and DSD® quality. Heifetz authority John Maltese provides a new introductory essay.Less than two weeks after his sensational US debut at Carnegie Hall, a 16-year-old Russian émigré named Jascha Heifetz protégé of the legendary St. Petersburg violin teacher Leopold Auer and already acclaimed in Europe made his first Victor recordings. Some 40 years later he began re-recording much of the mainstream violin repertoire for RCA Victor in stereo. These performances find Heifetz at his most intense and glowing, wrote Gramophone in its March 1988 obituary, and their continued release on CD is building up a stunning three-dimensional sound-picture of Heifetz at his peak. In warhorses like the Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky and Sibelius concertos, his stereo LPs set new standards. Reviewing a previous reissue, ClassicsToday exclaimed: Heifetz and Munch play the [Beethoven] with a classical poise and chiseled perfection. It goes withou...

The Heifetz / Piatigorsky Concerts: Album Collection
The Heifetz / Piatigorsky Concerts: Album
The renowned artists, violinist Jascha Heifetz and cellist Gregor Piatigorsky, joined forces in 1949 at Chicago's Ravinia Festival. Twelve years later, and now good friends, both artists were in semi-retirement from the concert stage, yet enjoyed their evenings of chamber music with friends. Here they conceived The Heifetz-Piatigorsky Concerts as a way to share their love of chamber music with the public. They aimed to present repertoire not often heard in concert and then record them. The Heifetz-Piatigorsky Concerts continued for several years, with a series of performances in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York that included a range of distinguished guest artists. The last of these concerts was in 1974 when Heifetz ended his performing career. This first ever complete collection of The Heifetz-Piatigorsky Concerts includes Dvorak's Piano Quintet No. 2 and Tchaikovsky's Souvenir de Florence. The 21 CDs are packaged in mini-sleeves with the original album artwork and feature a new introduction by Heifetz expert John Maltese.

These three composers suffered the scorn of many critics when they were alive because they composed for (horror!) movie soundtracks and got paid (gasp!) big bucks for it. In fact, none these compositions threatens the status of Beethoven or Brahms, but the composers were solidly trained in the Central European classical tradition, they knew how to write and orchestrate a tune, and their lush, late-Romantic style is tailor-made for Jascha Heifetz. --Joe McLellan
