Leroy Anderson's 'solo' record career began in 1950, recording his own works such as are found on this compilation. Like other compositions, his best known tune "Sleigh Ride", written in 1948, had first been recorded by Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Orchestra, and was a minor hit around Christmas, 1949. As both an instrumental and a vocal number (Mitchell Parish added lyrics, as he did to "Fiddle-Faddle", "Serenata", "Belle Of The Ball" and "Blue Tango"), "Sleight Ride" went on to become a true perennial, as seasonally reliable as Christmas itself. Under his own name, by far Anderson's biggest selling tune was "Blue Tango", issued at the end of 1951 and soon a clear million-plus best seller, achieved despite numerous cover versions from the likes of Guy Lombardo, Hugo Winterhalter and Les Baxter.

The Christmas Album: Holiday Favorites for French Horns [Includes Leroy Anderson's Sleigh Ride]
The Christmas Album: Holiday Favorites for French Horns
For many, Christmas time and music are inseparable. There have been countless songs, carols and musical compositions written on the theme of Christmas. Whether sacred or secular, music is an integral part of this festive holiday. When choosing which pieces to include on this Christmas album, we wanted to create one large opus that would serenade not only horn aficionados, but listeners all over the world, bringing them into the Christmas season. Following a previous successful collaboration on a large horn ensemble project, it was clear that the American Horn Quartet and horns of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra were destined to combine forces once more. This Christmas album is the result, and will be the last from the AHQ before their retirement. Thanks to the great artistry and support of all those involved, this magical program came into being, serving not only as a farewell to the horn world from the American Horn Quartet, but as a musical gift to the world at large. Merry Christmas!

A Christmas Festival with Leroy Anderson
A Christmas Festival with Leroy
Anderson lived in Western Connecticut atop one of the gentler foothills leading to the Berkshires, and it is in this serene setting that he composed his many songs and suites (always sans words) which transcend cthe designations of popular or serious music. His music is popular, in that it has won him enormous admiration throughout the civilized world; and yet serious, too, in that it has the lasting value denied to most contemporary music. He was a guest conductor at about the same time he joined the famed Boston Pops Orchestra as arranger and orchestrator. Fiedler encouraged him as a composer and c onductor, introducing his new works almost as fast as Anderson completed them. Their popularity was immediate; and the rest, from Sleigh Ride, Blue Tango and Syncopated Clock, through to the Irish and Scottish suites, including the recent fine score for the Broadway musical Goldilocks, is history. This album extends Anderson's range yet again. His gifted, unique way with a tune has now been applied to music for the most beautiful of our seasonal holidays. Here, indeed is music of goodwill.
