Pendleton Round-Up at 100: Oregon's Legendary Rodeo

Pendleton Round-Up at 100: Oregon's Legendary

Every September since 1910, the Pendleton Round-Up has drawn thousands of rodeo fans to a small town in eastern Oregon. For seven days, the crowds in Pendleton thrill to contests that range from bull riding and bronc busting to barrel racing and bareback Indian relays. This extravagantly illustrated book commemorates the centennial of the Round-Up and captures its enduring appeal in Oregon, the Pacific Northwest, and the world of rodeo. As highlighted in these pages, the Pendleton Round-Up has many singular features. First, there is its famous “bucking horse” logo and its signature slogan, “Let ‘er Buck.” Then there are its unique long wooden chutes and hard grass turf. And from the very beginning, American Indians have been as much a part of the Round-Up scene as the cowboys and roughstock. In the rodeo’s Native American Village, Indians camp in traditional tipis and celebrate their long-standing cultural traditions.Beautifully designed, this book features a breadth of color and black-and-white photographs—more than 900—showcasing the riders, the drama, and the special atmosphere that is Pendleton.

Aloha Rodeo: Three Hawaiian Cowboys, the World's Greatest Rodeo, and a Hidden History of the American West

Aloha Rodeo: Three Hawaiian Cowboys, the World's Greatest

The triumphant true story of the native Hawaiian cowboys who shocked America at the 1908 world rodeo championships"An inspiring and impeccably crafted story of against-all-odds triumph.” —Simon Winchester"Groundbreaking. … Not only a must-read, but an essential addition. … One of the best single volumes on the rise and diversity of the North American cattle industry and the cowboy culture." —True WestIn August 1908, three unknown riders arrived in Cheyenne, Wyoming, their hats adorned with wildflowers, to compete in the world’s greatest rodeo. Steer-roping virtuoso Ikua Purdy and his cousins Jack Low and Archie Ka’au’a had travelled 4,200 miles from Hawaii, of all places, to test themselves against the toughest riders in the West. Dismissed by whites, who considered themselves the only true cowboys, the native Hawaiians would astonish the country, returning home champions—and American legends. An unforgettable human drama set against the rough-knuckled frontier, David Wolman and Julian Smith’s Aloha Rodeo unspools the fascinating and little-known true story of the Hawaiian cowboys, or paniolo, whose 1908 adventure upended the conventional history of the American West. What few understood when the three paniolo rode into Cheyenne is that the Hawaiians wer...

Bullhide Hats 2812 Rodeo Round-up Collection Turn Around 15X Natural Cowboy Hat

Bullhide Hats 2812 Rodeo Round-up Collection Turn Around

Bullhide Hats have gained special recognition in the western market because of their superior finish, innovative style and exclusive trimmings. These qualities make Bullhide Hats unique. Choosing the right Hat body is only the beginning of the laborious process of making a Bullhide Hat. First each hat body is handcrafted by expert artisans using different materials: Fur felt, wool felt, and natural straws. Before qualifying as a Bullhide Hat, our hats have to pass a careful inspection made by our skilled hatters. Each hat body is hand dipped in a special lacquer, which makes the hats more durable, water-resistant and easy to clean. Unlike some other manufactures that run their hats trough ovens, our hats are allowed to air-dry. This process takes longer, but it allows the stiffener to cure uniformly and eliminates peeling and cracking. After the completion of the stiffening process, the hats are ready for the blocking process. We use heat, pressure, and extreme care to give the hat its final size and shape. Our hats are then trimmed to the proper brim width. On all straw and crushable felt hats we sew a special wire to the brim. This brim wire will allow you to customize your hat to your liking. It is what we call a "U-style it" brim. Then sweatbands are individually fitted to ea...

Livingston Roundup Rodeo (Images of America)

Livingston Roundup Rodeo (Images of

The Livingston Roundup Rodeo was started in 1926 by a group of local businessmen. Their goal was to create an event to keep travelers in Livingston. The rodeo continued until the onset of World War II and was canceled during the war years. In the late 1940s, a young man approached one of the local businessmen and asked to use money held at the First National Park Bank (today known as First Interstate Bank) to revive the old rodeo. Today, the Livingston Roundup Rodeo is one on the most renowned events of its kind. Visitors come from all over the world to attend this wonderful three-day event that occurs every year from July 2 to 4. Hosting more than 5,000 people every night, the rodeo has seen wedding parties, family reunions, and even a surprise engagement every now and then.
