The House Of Medici: Its Rise and Fall
The House Of Medici: Its Rise and
It was a dynasty with more wealth, passion, and power than the houses of Windsor, Kennedy, and Rockefeller combined. It shaped all of Europe and controlled politics, scientists, artists, and even popes, for three hundred years. It was the house of Medici, patrons of Botticelli, Michelangelo and Galileo, benefactors who turned Florence into a global power center, and then lost it all.The House of Medici picks up where Barbara Tuchman's Hibbert delves into the lives of the Medici family, whose legacy of increasing self-indulgence and sexual dalliance eventually led to its self-destruction. With twenty-four pages of black-and-white illustrations, this timeless saga is one of Quill's strongest-selling paperbacks.

Slipping the Grid
A story of love and romance with a mystical twist. The protagonist, Skylar, a professor and authority on Native American Art, returns to the US after teaching in Japan. Forutne falls on her. While coping with a life changing career move Skylar must come to grips with Takeo, her soul mate and left-behind lover. Love can not be denied. She and Takeo meet in Italy for holiday. Skylar wrestles with the choice of her female contemporaries - love vs career. Their relationship is tested and questioned as they experience Italy. Travel through Tuscany and Rome is told short-story like. Skylar does not see herself as a mystic. However, while sightseeing at the colosseo a deja vu moment permits her to recall her lfe as an Etruscan gladiator. Another vignette tells of her beginnings s a foundling on the steps of the Church of Santa Croce in Florence and of her stuggles through life as a woman of the Renaissance. Her creative aspirations allow her to mingle with the wealthy, tangle with the Florentine Guilds and the Catholic Church, find love, and endure the turmoil of the times. This is the sequel to "Ancient Echoes" (2013) in which Skylar's life in ancient China, Japan, Mongolia, Indonesia, and the American old West unfold. Both books treat the reader to forays into ancient history with a s...

Excerpt from Mornings in Florence: Being Simple Studies of Christian Art for English Travellers; I. Santa Croce, II. The Golden Gate, III. Before the Soldan, IV. The Vaulted Book, V. The Strait Gate, Vi. The Shepherd's TowerIr seems to me that the real duty involved in my Oxford professorship cannot be completely done by giving lectures in Oxford only, but that I ought also to give what guidance I may to travellers in Italy. The following letters are written as I would write to any of my friends who asked me what they ought preferably to study in limited time and I hope they may be found of use if read in the places which they describe, or before the pictures to which they refer. But in the outset let me give my readers one piece of practical advice. If you can afford it, pay your custode or sacristan well. You may think it an injustice to the next comer but your paying him ill is an injustice to all comers, for the necessary result of your doing so is that he will lock up or cover whatever he can, that he may get his penny fee for showing it and that, thus exacting a small tax from everybody, he is thankful to none, and gets into a sullen passion if you stay more than a quarter of a minute to look at the object after it is uncovered. And you Will not find it pos sible to examine ...

About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Filippo Brunelleschi: The Buildings
Filippo Brunelleschi: The
Filippo Brunelleschi's few but seminal buildings have stood as touchstones of a "return to Antiquity" in the Florentine era since his own day. Their quiet balance and perfection have fascinated and delighted generations of architecture students. Howard Saalman offers here a definitive modern study of Brunelleschi's buildings, based on detailed archaeological investigation of the monuments and new exhaustive research in the Florentine archives. Saalman reassesses Brunelleschi's architectural work in the context of the political, economic, and religious environment of early fifteenth-century Florence. He reexamines Brunelleschi's personal style of designing details and of managing the quantity and disposition of light in his metrically and geometrically proportioned spaces. Saalman devotes much attention to the role of Brunelleschi's leading patrons, the Barbadori in their chapel in Santa Felicita, Cosimo de'Medici at San Lorenzo, Andrea Pazzi at the chapter house of the Pazzi in the convent of Santa Croce, and the Scolari at the Angeli rotunda. The picture of Brunelleschi that emerges confirms earlier views of him as a traditionalist with a new language. But readers will find here a new dimension of historical precision and clarity in the definition of this much studied architect....

Spirituality in Conflict: Saint Francis and Giotto’s Bardi Chapel
Spirituality in Conflict: Saint Francis and Giotto’s Bardi
Few saints have received so much attention as Francis of Assisi and few artists so much attention as Giotto di Bondone—and yet the master’s cycle of Saint Francis in the Bardi Chapel of Santa Croce in Florence has been little discussed. Similarly, the remarkable panel that now serves as the chapel’s altarpiece has been given only cursory consideration by historians and art historians—even though this panel, with its twenty narrative scenes of the saint’s life, represents the most complete visualization of mid-thirteenth-century Franciscan spirituality which has survived. In this book Goffen shoes how the history of Santa Croce itself, which contains both of these works of art, parallels and summarizes the early history of the Order of Friars Minor. Santa Croce was and is the most important Franciscan church of Florence and, like the order itself in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, it was bitterly divided into opposing factions, the Spirituals and the Conventuals. We see here that, tragically, the source of their disagreement lay in the character of Saint Francis himself. Unlike the Dominicans—and, indeed, unlike all other contemporary religious orders—the Friars Minor fostered a “cult of personality” of their founder. Precisely because Francis provided the e...

A Room with a View (Dover Thrift Editions)
A Room with a View (Dover Thrift
In common with much of his other writing, this work by the eminent English novelist and essayist E. M. Forster (1879–1970) displays an unusually perceptive view of British society in the early 20th century. Written in 1908, A Room with a View is a social comedy set in Florence, Italy, and Surrey, England. Its heroine, Lucy Honeychurch, struggling against straitlaced Victorian attitudes of arrogance, narrow-mindedness and snobbery, falls in love-while on holiday in Italy-with the socially unsuitable George Emerson. Caught up in a claustrophobic world of pretentiousness and rigidity, Lucy ultimately rejects her fiancé, Cecil Vyse, and chooses, instead, to wed her true love, the young man whose sense of freedom and lack of artificiality became apparent to her in the Italian pensione where they first met. This classic exploration of passion, human nature and social convention is reprinted here complete and unabridged.
